Translation Tuesday is an on-going series of translations focused on contemporary Scandinavian literature. In this second edition of Translation Tuesday, Sheri and Neus have translated a poem from Caspar Eric’s 7/11 (2014) into English and Spanish.
Caspar Eric is one of the most prominent poets in the Danish literary scene. His debut poetry collection, 7/11 is, to borrow from Lilian Munk Rösing, straight out of “generation hashtag, generation download, generation webcam, generation iPhone, generation wtf snapchat, generation megabytes, generation babybites.”* Following a dedication in the form of an email screenshot and an introductory inventory of the collection’s main characters–including alien, facebook, dj, gif-file, girls, macbook, oral sex, tree, and wtf–Caspar Eric mashes up classical poetic tropes and pop cultural references. The first-person perspective tracks a self-absorbed young man as he moves through mundane, everyday situations. Flickers of apathy, frustration, and desire radiate dully from this poetic screen of a text saturated with selfies, hangover pizza, internet porn, and vegetarians.
Caspar Eric was born in 1987 and studied Comparative Literature at the University of Copenhagen. He has written three collections of poetry (7/11, Nike, and Avatar) and won the Michael Strunge Prize for Nike. He has also translated Tao Lin’s Shoplifting from American Apparel into Danish.

i’m hungover
at a dinner party
and they’re serving [vegetarian food]
and someone’s talking about ethical responsibility
and there isn’t any sauce
for the lentil burgers
and i want to scream
how can you think
you’re taking the vulnerability of other people seriously
when you forget the sauce
but i don’t want to ruin the nice atmosphere
because i don’t really have that many friends
so i want to be able to deal with the consequences
of how bored i am
and not lie as much as i do
because i feel like everyone’s stories are idiotic
or don’t represent [the things i experience in the world]
and i consider recording the dinner conversation
via the microphone on my iphone
so i can estimate later
how much i lie
on average
when wine is involved
while i’m telling the same stories
over and over again in different versions
about who i am and so on
i want to try to figure out
why there’s always someone
who wants to play that party game
which is also a quiz you can take
on buzzfeed.com
where you have to guess
which character everyone is
from beverly hills 90210 (1990-2000)
and everyone has to be someone
and i’m always david silver’s friend scott
who collects toys
and commits suicide
with a handgun
in maybe the first episode of the second season
i say maybe
i’m more just david silver
or half brandon and half david silver
and i don’t really think i’m scott
but the rest of them say yea
yea you’re totally scott
something about the hair
and i have to be one person
and i can’t just be a combination
which is also ok
if i ignore
~99% of all the information in and about the world
which i usually do anyway
so that i can be all kinds of things
with sincere conviction
i could be so many things
besides a vegetarian
i really can’t be a vegetarian
i really hate vegetarians
or i usually feel like vegetarians
ignore ~99% of all the information in the world
and have this crazy idea that [anything] makes a difference
and that they’re better people
than for example people who eat baby bites from 7/11
but maybe i’m also just jealous
of people with principles and iphones
who i feel like provoking
for example by saying that vegetarians are just little bitches
and suddenly i’m sitting here justifying suicide
as if it’s a logical consequence of being vegetarian
which i could easily justify
if i didn’t have sisters
and especially if suicide
had a really long intro
with a ton of sick spin tricks
and kickflips
and meant that you could smoke gauloises
in bed with another person
which in a way isn’t suicide
but in a way actually is
because i’m constantly destroying my body with my body
it seems so dumb
having a massive hangover
and a bad conscience
about [the things i do when i’m drunk]
which feels like most things
and i don’t want to be a better person
i don’t even want to feel better
because then i’d already be better
so many things could make me feel better
skateboarding could feel make me feel better
or being the kind of person who skateboards
if i threw something i could feel better
even though i should probably just go home
i just want to go to the movies
where being alone can seem like a special talent
or like i’m a person
who’s really into art and film
and doesn’t have any problems
with people thinking i’m lonely
because i don’t care what other people think
i just want to watch her (2013)
and feel real feelings
and feel like her (2013) is the most important film in the world
and i want to sit there drinking vitamin water
with the attitude of a professional athlete

yo tengo resaca
durante una cena
y sirven [comida vegetariana]
o mitad brandon y mitad david silver
si no tuviese hermanas
si lanzase algo me sentiría mejor
aunque debería irme a casa
me apetece ir al cine
donde estar solo puede parecer un talento
o como si soy una persona
a la que le va el arte y el cine
y no tienen ningún problema
sólo quiero ver her (2013)
y experimentar sentimientos reales
y quiero sentarme y beber aquarius
con la actitud de atleta profesional
