Ark Books and Jane Flett welcome you to a cozy and fun early evening chat about Flett’s thrilling debut novel, Freakslaw, a carnivalesque literary horror and “queer punk masterpiece.”
Jane Flett is a Scottish-born, Berlin-based author and a founder of Queer Stories Berlin. Her fiction has been commissioned for BBC Radio 4 and featured in Electric Literature’s Recommended Reading. She is the recipient of several honors, including the Scottish Book Trust New Writer Award, the New Orleans Writing Residency, and the Berlin Senate Stipend for non-German literature.
In Freakslaw, Flett’s first novel, celebrated in The Guardian as a “transgressive, inventive dark fantasy,” a queer, deviant carnival arrives unexpectedly in the repressed Scottish town of Pitlaw. Upending social conventions and transgressing boundaries, the carnival brings mayhem and the possibility of escape for many of the inhabitants of this small, insular community. However, behind the seductive exterior of the carnival lurks something darker—a desire for revenge that might lead to dire consequences for those initially seduced by the carnival’s dazzling veneer.
The event will consist of a reading, discussion, Q&A, and signing with Jane Flett.
Beers, non-alcoholic beverages, and snacks will be provided. We welcome any contributions to support future events.
Limited copies of Freakslaw are available for purchase at Ark Books now and during the event.
